  • Typically, when dining out, I expect to find a wine list consisting of the commercial wine conglomerates’ most predictable selections. My curiosity was sparked when I stumbled across a Shiraz from India while skimming through the wine list at a neighborhood Indian food restaurant. I shamefully admit, I had low expectations of the wine. This wasn’t consequent of the wine originating from India. This was consequent of the other subpar selections teamed beside this shiraz on the menu. As it turns out, for a table wine, I was pleasantly surprised. This wine was heavily aromatized with chai spices and tandoori oven smoke, which came through equally on the palate along with plenty of dark fruit flavors one might expect from a shiraz. If you’re in the mood to try something unique, try a bottle of Sula. It’s interestingly fun.

  • Very good full bodied shiraz, hint of earthy-leather added complexity. Bought for the novelty for an India foods dinner party. Big hit and went through 3 bottles quickly.

  • I was really surprised by this one. Like the previous reviewer, I too could smell... India. Like sandalwood incense, making me wonder whether it was real or had been manipulated. There is a lot going on in this wine though, and for the price I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to anyone who likes Shiraz. It's wine from a new region and it really doesn't suck! After a couple of glasses I was finding it a bit much, though.

  • Lawrence's Birthday Dinner (Chao San Cuisine, Beach Road): Not great, but surprisingly drinkable. Lots of sweet spices on the nose, sandlewood, cloves, nutmeg, along with some dark berries, blueberry aromas and a touch of preserved plums along with a backdrop of little Jasmine flowers. Might be imagination, but this reminded vaguely of Indian spice. The palate was unfortunately less interesting. A bit bland, a bit thin, but it did have a lot of freshness in its dark fruit and sour plum flavours which were again sprinkled with some spice and a touch of tobacco smoke that rounded out the finish. Drinkable but not great - this was the only bottle left half-full at the end of the night.
