  • Tasted blind and on a hot summer's night. Classic aged Coonawarra Cabernet characteristics - persistent plums and earth, fine acid spine and tannins resolved. The intensity of the fruit had me guessing that this could be a late 80s/early 90s Wynns John Riddoch, so it was quite the surprise when this was unveiled.

This bottle had perfect provenance, drawn from the winery/head office's museum recently. It is likely that most other bottles of this wine in the wild will not be as pristine. Superb. [RS]

  • Bought at auction for 27 bucks. Level was maybe 5ml above the base of the neck. Didn't expect much - my birth year wasn't great in Coonawarra. Had a '98 recently which was corked and faded. This was, by contrast, absolutely glorious. Took some time to open up - but rewarded my $27 investment with a magnificent varietal cabernet nose of eucalypt, camphor, moss, wet stones, prunes and portello. Great acid and fruit balance given its age, not huge length but enough to go great with spinach and ricotta cannelloni. Threw a heap of sediment, should have decanted it, really. Great stuff.
