  • 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Piere vineyard, planted mainly to Italian clones with loose clusters rather than more tightly-packed French clones. Average vine age 15 years. Harvested in the first half of September, 2008. The grapes are first crushed and cold-soaked, after which they are fermented for two and half weeks in cool temperatures with selected yeasts. The wine is aged for 7 months on the lees in stainless steel tanks, partial MLF. The wine is left to settle and clarify naturally. Bottled in May 2009. 14,8% alcohol, 5,1 g/l acidity and pH 3,45. Total production 52,594 bottles, 2,056 half bottles and 499 magnums.

Medium-deep lemon-yellow color. The nose feels quite true to the variety, only with an evolved overall character with aromas of ripe golden currants and honeyed richness, some vegetal notes of currant leaves, a little bit of cat's pee, light passion fruit tones, a hint of crunchy citrus fruits and a touch of leesy creaminess. The wine feels a bit evolved yet surprisingly youthful and firm on the palate with a medium body and intense, dry flavors of honeydew melon and vegetal notes of currant leaves, some developed notes of beeswax, a little bit of savory spice, light stony mineral notes, a hint of ripe golden currant and a touch of passion fruit. The high alcohol lends some breadth, richness and warmth to the palate but the overall feel is still pretty fresh and focused, thanks to the high acidity. The finish is dry, complex and concentrated with a lengthy aftertaste of cantaloupe and honeyed richness, some sweeter notes of apple jam, a little bit of savory spices, light stony mineral notes, a developed hint of beeswax and a vegetal touch of currant leaves. The high alcohol makes the wine end on a somewhat warm note.

A big, ripe and quite impactful Sauvignon Blanc that is not only surprisingly fresh and focused for its size, but also surprisingly youthful for its age! I'm not the biggest fan of SB and I admit that the somewhat noticeable varietal qualities do distract me a bit - it is rather odd to have a wine that is this big and ripe yet show some vegetal qualities - but there is enough depth, complexity and bold fruit to keep things interesting. A very interesting take on the variety and a surprisingly harmonious effort for the size and high alcohol. From the specifications alone, this shouldn't be my kind of wine. However, I found the wine quite impressive and enjoyable - along with the similarly bold yet balanced 2008 Vieris Sauvignon that we tasted next to this. The wine got a total of 2 points from the nine participants in our tasting of 12 Ščurek and Vie di Romans wines, finishing on sixth place. Priced according to its quality at 34€.

  • Tasted during an evening of wines chosen to be slightly weird or unusual! We started with this 2008 sauvignon blanc, which had lay hidden in a store for many years. We weren't sure what to expect from a 13 year old sauvignon. Opened and poured to reveal and orangey / amber colour. The nose showed ripe apricots, almost like a dessert wine. Unsurprisingly, the palate was nothing like a sauvignon! Dry, smooth and rich, honeyed, dried fruit, apricots. Quite long. Slightly bitter finish, herbal and fennel. If I had to describe like any other wine, I'd say like a mature, slightly sweet semillon. It had expired within an hour. I can't say I liked it, but it was an interesting experience to try such an old sauvignon. I don't think it's possible to give it a score.

  • Bel vino precisissimo, lineare, ricco, tecnicamente notevole.

    Vino molto, molto buono.
