We question Cerreto’s choices for bricco asili during elevage that result rich wines to start but have this dry feeling with age. This needed decanting to remove the Sulphur notes on the nose. The nose is classic beyond that, dried cherries mostly. The palate lacked breadth and depth of flavour, felt dry and linear. 88 and past it’s best

Lunch with Rich (Poke, then home): Coravin 6/26/17: Decanted and immediately tasted. Light clear ruby with some bricking at the edges; moderately aromatic nose with fresh red fruit, spice, slight vanilla oak, leather; palate is light bodied, very high youthful tannins, prominent but not astringent or drying, high acid, balanced medium alcohol, youthful red fruit; medium length finish with some remaining tannins. Initially on the nose this could be a spanish tempranillo with its fruit and oak, well balanced but lacking some classic roses and tar that would hint this was Barbaresco. On the palate the balance and tannins are unmistakable. This is a balanced modern style for Nebbiolo, and it still seems young and will improve for 5-10 years. 91 7/4/17: Opened the remaining half bottle. Within 30 minutes, the nose developed into something really lovely, very aromatic, roses, red fruit; palate is youthful but approachable, good fruit, still high tannin; medium to medium-long finish. Really, really lovely, even better than when first opened. This will still age nicely for a decade. 91++ After 6 hours of air, the nose is more muted. This may be so young that it needs a full day to come around, or so old that it was best when first opened? I'm not sure which one it is.

More subtle and delicate than the other wines of the evening, this had flavors of red berry and vanilla oak. Floral aromas are touched with strawberry.
