From a perfect looking bottle, this wine had a deep red center with red/orange rims. The medium intensity nose put forth black cherries, powdered slate, raisins, black spices, and a hint of nail polish.
In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with a great richness. It was nicely integrated other than there was a bit of alcohol showing. However, one of the strong features of this wine was that the notable finish was dominated by fruit, not acidity.
I would say this was at its peak and was certainly fun to drink!

Muted fruit, but quite a lot of barnyard (brettanomyces) in the beginning. After being aired for two hours the fun increases. An old school wine with lots of power (16% Vol). Flavour profile not typical for Amarone, but balanced and distinguished. Could last another 10 - 15 years but won´t improve. Unfortunately this has been the only bottle in my cellar. But regarding the Price for current bottlings (around 100 .- €) and my guess about my purchase price in the early nineties, i´m not surprised that i didn´t buy a case.

New Year's Day Long Italian Lunch (Eketahuna, New Zealand): Volitile - age is apparent - this has a beautifully modulated look about it. Tobacco and cut pear top notes, which for me are always a clear indication of Amarone. Sweet entry, spicy, ripe and vibrant mouthfeel with a warm finish I particularly like the hint of pickled walnuts at the end. Excellent.

not as good a showing this time, although we drank it at the end of a long night featuring a diversity of excellent wines. This bottle just didn't sing and was uni-dimentional - nothing like our last bottle, but perhaps it needs to be appreciated on its own with plenty of time...

Bottle and fill excellent, cork was wet most of the way up, but sound. Very attractive from the start. Beautiful and warm with cherry, Christmas spice and a lovely finishing bitterness that grew with time. 16% alcohol, but it wears it well - I finally got the "amaro" character of this wine and found it very appealing. Excellent partner to a complex chicken dish with orange, olives, chorizo, sun dried tomato and couscous. My wife loved this wine. Maybe it was the food, the novelty of the wine style, the Autumn night or something else, but I really felt that we were drinking one of the great wines of the world.
