  • Bernard Burtschy dinner at Taberna del Alabardero (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): Bernard kindly contributed this fascinating wine. According to Bernard the equal portion of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Apparently Chateau Margaux had the similar composition in the 19th century. Light red color and the nose reflects that, bright red fruits, a hint of tapenade, cedar and a hint of green that adds complexity. Although delicate, it remained expressive for awhile. Lovely wine.

  • High shoulder fill, solid but fully saturated cork. Decanted and drunk immediately. Medium to slightly pale cherry red, pale at edges but overall a very healthy color for a 38 year old wine! Aromas are medium intensity but gained with air-- tea, cranberries, cherries, raisins, leather, brown sugar aromas, with plenty of red fruits still in evidence. Added bitter chocolate notes with air. On the palate this was definitely still fruity! Medium cherry and cranberry flavors, very smooth texture, light tannins still in evidence, it gained some freshness and length as it aired in a decanter. Balanced acidicity adds length to the strong finish. What a treat! It faded after about an hour and a half but drank very well till then.
