When my father turned 59 this week and I invited him to a birthday dinner, I had a very emotional moment. We opened the 1961 Barolo Enrico Serafino and it was a goosebumps moment. First, I smelled orange marmelade. I decanted the wine for 5 hours and after that I had the most complex wine in my glass that I ever experienced. Mon Cheri, cherry confit, Smoked bacon, rum, soja sauce, beef jerky, walnuts,... the complexity went on and on. Hard to believe that an old wine can have so much power...

Over the hill. Caramel sherry nose gave me hope but all that was left on the palate was acid. Not vinegar but not a wine with any pleasure left. Same 24 hours after decanting.

Opened a bottle to verify my surprisingly high score and it was again such a beautiful wine!

Deep, dark color. Warm, slightly metallic - but somehow in a good way, licorice, beautiful and long.

Syrupy buttery smell, taste is balanced with silky but firm tannins.
