  • Decanted for5 hours. Red color with brick at the rim. Well integrated flavors, but prominent alcohol detracts. Did not pair with pasta as well as I expected

  • In the grand tapestry of life, there exist moments so ineffably beautiful that they become timeless, etched into the very fabric of our souls. The summer of 1999 in the picturesque village of Castiglione Falletto was one such chapter, a fleeting yet enduring interlude that lingers in my memory like a cherished sonnet. It was a season of azure skies and sun-kissed vineyards, where fate, in its whimsical design, led me to a small, quaint café nestled amidst the rolling hills of Piedmont. There, amidst the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the melodic chatter of the villagers, I encountered Michelle, a vision of ethereal grace and warmth. Her eyes, the color of the deepest sapphires, held the secrets of the universe, and her smile, reminiscent of the purest indulgence, was as delightful as a scoop of the richest gelato. In her presence, time seemed to stand still, and the world outside melted into insignificance.

It was in the enchanting embrace of that memory that I uncorked the 2009 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto, a wine of unparalleled finesse and grandeur. As the first tendrils of its aroma caressed my senses, I was transported back to the cobblestone streets of Castiglione Falletto, to that very café where destiny had woven our paths together. The wine, like a maestro orchestrating a symphony of olfactory delights, unveiled a bouquet of ripe cherries, velvety roses, and a hint of earthiness that spoke of the vineyards' ancient wisdom. Its color, reminiscent of garnet and rubies, shimmered in the candlelight, casting an enchanting spell upon the room.

Upon the first sip, the wine embraced my palate with a velvety elegance, a harmonious balance of power and grace that resonated with the essence of the Italian countryside. Its flavors, a melange of luscious red berries, delicate violets, and traces of truffle, unfolded like the verses of a love poem, each note echoing the passion of the vintner and the terroir from which it was born. The tannins, supple yet firm, embraced my tongue like a lover's gentle caress, leaving a lingering impression that was as tender as the memory of Michelle's soft lips against mine.

With each subsequent sip, I found myself delving deeper into the layers of this extraordinary wine, discovering nuances that mirrored the complexity of human emotions. Just as the wine revealed its hidden depths, so too did it resurrect the tender moments spent with Michelle. Her laughter, like the effervescent bubbles in a glass of champagne, echoed in my ears, and her touch, as delicate as the petals of a rose, lingered on my skin. In the dance of flavors that unfolded within the glass, I discerned the sweetness of her laughter, the warmth of her gaze, and the intoxicating allure of her presence.

The 2009 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto, with its impeccable structure and sublime character, became a vessel through which I could relive that summer romance. Its velvety texture, akin to the softness of Michelle's skin, caressed my senses, evoking a sense of nostalgia that was as intoxicating as the wine itself. In its depths, I found solace and sanctuary, a sanctuary where the boundaries of time and space dissolved, and the ephemeral nature of life was transcended by the eternal power of love.

As the evening waned and the candlelight flickered, I raised my glass in a silent toast to the memories of that summer in Castiglione Falletto, to the serendipitous encounter with Michelle, and to the profound beauty of the 2009 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto. In its essence, I discovered not just a wine but a muse, an inspiration that awakened the dormant poet within me. It is a wine that embodies the very essence of romance, a elixir that transports the soul to the realms of passion and enchantment. In the years to come, whenever I uncork a bottle of this magnificent vintage, I shall be transported back to that summer of 1999, to the village of Castiglione Falletto, and to the embrace of a love that transcends the boundaries of time and space. Such is the magic of the 2009 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto—a wine that not only tantalizes the taste buds but also ignites the flames of the heart, leaving an indelible mark on the tapestry of one's existence.

Note to self. Decant one out, finesse glas by glass came alive immediately.

  • Brief note at the end of a long night, to me this was classic in every sense, with deeply pitched tar, still a healthy amount of structure for the vintage, some faint florals. Sturdy at this stage and held up to some fairly spicy food.

  • Decanted with minimal sediment in last ounce. Pale ruby, minimal bricking typical of youthful nebbiolo; high intensity aromatics, roses, floral, red fruited, canned red bell pepper?, slight tar; palate is light bodied, medium-plus to high tannin, slight excess alcohol and warmth (14.5%), medium-plus acidity, red fruited; finish is a bit shorter than expected, medium-minus length at best. Overall this seems like a high quality Barolo with points for its aromatics and its classic style, held back by its alcohol (maybe a product of the vintage) and its finish. It does lack a bit of magic that I would expect at this price range, but it is still very enjoyable and seems likely to improve over 10-20 years. 91-92+
On retastes over the next 24 hours: When I come back to this the alcohol always seems a bit too prominent, and I wonder whether I have overrated this wine a bit, but then I keep coming back to the glass and it is very enjoyable despite the touch of heat. So I leave it where it is and I will enjoy my last bottle sometime in the next decade, though I see no reason to search for more.
