  • Purchased several bottles from a Berkeley importer upon release. In the last 5 years, the bottle showed signs of leakage and, like the 93 Spätlese from the same producer (and importer), the cork had sunk into the neck of the bottle around 1/4". Still, the cork was solid and tight with only 1/2" of the cork remaining in the bottle after the first try at removal.

Color is medium/dark yellow color which seems normal. Nose is pretty subdued and so too is the palate. Flavors include a fleeting bit of petrol plus apple, banana, and toffee. Does not appear flabby as it possess reasonable acidity and some mineralality, but does not seem well put together. Also, seems a bit dry - especially for a Auslese, but perhaps such sweetness "dries-up" over the years - similar to what you notice in some old Sauternes. Anyway, I though this level of sweetness would reveal itself. Who knows? Not sure of the vintage. Perhaps there was storage problem in transit to the US. Bottom line, I am not that impressed. Have one more bottle left; it does not have any obvious signs of leakage, so it might be a better wine.

(Served with chicken Teriyaki and rice.)

  • An evening with wine geeks (Private location, Trier): At first the Hermannshöhle had a hard time against the Grünhaus, because it was not as expressive. But with time it opened up and showed a perfect, focused and elegant Nahe Auslese with lots of tension and mineral notes. At its peak. 92-93

  • A magical bottle. Honey, petrol, flint, fresh apples and sweet florals. It is rich and electrically fresh at the same time. Crystalline, pure fruit.
