  This was impressive with leather, old wood, caramel and a candied cherry overtone that lingers on top of the glass as it fills with air. Elegant and balanced. Smooth and light bodied but by no means fragile. It just keeps getting better and better with air. Long finish. Lovely aged Rioja. No rush to drink this one. Drink now-2024.

  Corcho excelente, apenas tintado, elástico (seguramente se reencorchó antes de salir al mercado). De color rojizo granatoso de capa media-alta, tapado, más extraído de lo que se podía esperar. Reflejos granadinos y anaranjados, brillante, límpido, sin presencia de precipitado. Borde estrecho, atejado, muy marcado respecto al menisco.
  
  Potente, inmediato, con mucha presencia. Viene repleto de registros que van de una parente austeridad a una expresión de mayor finura y complejidad. Se presenta espeso, con una batería de terciarios que lo tapan todo. Predominan los apuntes de cuadra, crin, barnices, tablones envinados, fibras vegetales (maromas, esparto) que van matizándose al ir tomando aire. Evoluciona con rapidez y se abre a fruta escarchada y notas de fina reducción (tabaco, ahumados, térreros, cedro, etc.). Mantiene en todo momento una curiosa "emulsión" entre el carácter tosco inicial y la ganancia progresiva de finura, lo que le imprime personalidad y mucho encanto.
  
  En boca es ligero, sutil, suavísimo, mullido, con excelente balance y equilibrio. No hay una sola arista visible. Maduro y fresco, discursivo, asociado a un matiz residual de dulcedumbre de calidad, vainilla, canela... Aún mantiene pegada y energía para ser bebido en muy buenas condiciones. Parece estar llegando a su pico, o quizás ya lo esté. Para beber ya.

  100% tempranillo. 12.5% vol.
  - Vendimia manual durante la segunda semana del mes de octubre. Segunda selección de racimos en mesa a su llegada a la bodega. Un mínimo de 6 meses en depósitos de madera en los que finaliza las fermentaciones y se estabiliza. Maceración entre 25 y 35 días. Transvasado a barricas nuevas de roble francés y americano de 225 litros, confeccionadas por los toneleros de la propia bodega, en las que permanece durante 43 meses en contacto con la madera hasta su embotellado a principios del año 1991. Sometido a diversas trasiegas manuales de forma periódica. Un mínimo de 36 meses de guarda en botellero en los calados de la bodega antes de ser comercializado. Esta partida se comercializó en 2008 junto a otras añadas antiguas.

  It was fun to drink such an old wine. Strong musty hay barn nose, lots of dirt and wet rock. Did not taste much fruit but loads of damp mossy earth flavors. I enjoyed it because it was different, not my typical wine profile but was fun to drink... (More fruit came through on the second day...)

  Thanks as always to Chris Gallardo for bringing this by to go with house-made pizzas on the grill -- quintissential Rioja well-mellowed with time, asserting it's way out of the decanter with that heady plume of loam, forest floor, long-cellared oak, and ashy cave walls. Leather and mushroom on the palate to go with the fading fruit. At the end of its peak, but just delightful wistful reminder of walking through Spain.
