  • In my experience, this wine was the most perfectly aged and also the best wine/food pairing I have ever put together. The perfection of the bottle age may have resulted from the magnum size since most of my wines seem to reach a peak and then fade quickly, the magnum enjoys a longer period of peak maturity.
A lovely concentration of mahagony color that had moved away from the rim into several layers of color with a clear meniscus and normal viscosity. I did not decant. The wine achieved maximum aromatics quickly in the glass. Tobacco, dark fruit, a hint of smoke in a very, very complex bouquet that all remarked as both intellectually intriguing but also intoxicatingly luscious. The taste was very soft and round, no tannic edge at all with a marked acidity that made me want to eat heartily, savory, mellow, much more complex than any Merlot I have tasted with a lingering finish. This wine renewed my quest for the aged Bordeaux experience that I almost abandoned because of several over the hill 89s and 90s that I have tried recently. (It may be that I do not let my wines breathe sufficiently before drinking.) This wine paired perfectly with a rosemary marinated roasted lamb roullade with a mushroom and pork stuffing. To celebrate my 61st birthday with my dearest friends, the Usual Suspects.
