Louis Latour Marsannay (Rouge) (Marsannay-la-Côte) (www.louislatour.com); 13.5 pabv; $16/750 ml--Jerardi's Little Store; Dayton, OH. Imported by Louis Latour, San Francisco, CA. The reverse label states the vintage as 2000, not 1999.
The wine is the typically dense cherry color with a pinkish edge. When first opened it wasn't very impressive; I didn't decant it. It seemed a clumsy, confused sweet, warmish wine with plum the most evident scent and flavor, with not much finish.
After 24 hours, the nose is a spicy cherry pie with hints of allspice and browned pastry crust. It breathes mint and has good depth.
On the palate it echoes the nose; it's Marsannay sturdy but not clumsy, with a little meaty soupiness added to the finish. Tannins are fine and there is good mouth-filling grip. Excellent value and typicity, although I'm confused about the vintage. If there ever was a Burgundy that would make an excellent picnic wine, this is it.
[Marsannay is the first main town going south out of Dijon as one enters the Cote-de-Nuits. All wines (rouge, blanc, et rosé) are classified no higher than the Village level, although some might appear with a regional appellation (Côte-de-Nuits Villages). The reds usually have the broad-shouldered, muscular, almost rustic style of the northern end of the Côtes, similar to Fixin.]

Dark plum, very clear throughout. Good legs. Stewed red/black fruit and slight veg. Nice. Good acidity and balance, good fruit, slight pepperyness. Nice tannin, and good length. Very good.

Earthy and musty, with the slightest trace of cork taint. It's either flawed or over the hill.

Soft, rasberry. A little weak but fine when in the mood for something a little laid back.
