  • Drunk alongside the '11 les Amoureuses
Opened earlier in the day, then drunk over a couple hours. No premeditated reason for the difference, just two people doing different preps.

It's more savory, meatier, and structured than the les Amoreuses, with darker fruit and thankfully fewer green notes. It's a dense and more powerful pinot, but not heavy. It has depth, and a sense of gravitas. Power and grace. It's beautifully balanced and expansive on the palate. More impressive and overtly powerful (in a relative term when speaking of Bertheau) if a little less nuanced and fleeting than the Amoureuses. No surprises with the two vineyards, and a great study in terroir. This was beautiful and an exceptional showing for the vintage. It had much less of the green meanies and that was the difference maker. Drinking youthfully well but still years from it's apogee. Oddly though, and I don't mean to take anything away from this outstanding and then some wine, drinking the Bonnes Mares bummed me out a bit, as I got me thinking how good the les Amoureuses would have been without the flaw. 94

  • PNP. Cherry essence blended with some spice and pine needles on the nose. Very pure palate, lightly extracted with an acidic spine and a silky texture. Quintessential Bertheau purity of fruit and elegance.

  • Breathed for five hours prior. Quite an elegant and powerful rendition of the terroir, meaty, toned, yet bursting with nuanced minerality. Winner of the trio. 93-94

  • Dinner at Brian and Sylvia's (Duchess): Really, really nice - the last time I had this was in barrel at the domaine in 2012. Still youthful, but this is growing up to be a really nice bottle. The nose was nicely perched between Morey and Chambolle, with lifted notes of blueberries and crunchy black cherries laced with earth and warm spice, and a little lilt of florals at the sides. At points, a little touch of green herb drifted in and out; just enough to add interest to the bouquet rather than to distract. Very attractive. The palate was just lovely. I really liked the shape and structured on this, with really fine-boned, almost velvety tannins, and well-integrated but still nicely fresh acidity framing deliciously pure flavours of dark cherries and blueberries, again infused with a lovely seam of Morey spice and a little toss of earth. Perhaps on the lighter side for a Bonnes Mares, but this was certainly no push-over, with clearly Grand Cru intensity and energy to it. What stood out though was a lovely elegance and ease that is very much a hallmark of Bertheau’s best wines. Good finish too, with yummy flavours berry fruit with a touch of orange peel showing as it wound its way into a lingering back palate. This needs easily 6-8 years more before really hitting its stride, but it is such a lovely, elegant Bonnes Mares that there is no harm pouring it now.
