Lunch at La Trompette: Thought this was similar to the earlier Chapoutier but further along in its ageing curve, but not sure it being softer can be attributed to the appellation or its age.

Melvin's La Trompette Lunch (La Trompette, Chiswick, London): Quite dark in colour with legs appearing on the glass. Raspberries and forest floor on the nose. Lovely svelte tannins, remains quite fresh with a fine backbone of acidity with wild raspberries and medicinal notes on the mid-palate. This is probably on the cusp of entering its senior years as the fruit is fading but is still drinking very well and came over as quite regal.

Magnum. Medium ruby, with some bricking. Pristine cork. Touch of spicy white pepper. The overall sensation was refined, smooth, and elegant. Paired absolutely beautifully with truffle crusted sliced ribeye and foraged Morels. (Eric & Julie, thanks so much for sharing this lovely creature!)

Decanted for 2 hours, but knew right away from the nose this was going to be nice. Paired with a New York strip and an au gratin potato and cheese soufflé. Notes of black fruit, chocolate and a hint of leather, with a long and silky smooth finish. Overall, terrific balance and structure, and drank beautifully. I will acquire more of the ‘95 wherever and whenever I can.

Deep garnet. Mellow, smooth nose of cherries and forest. Taste was mellow, drinking now.
