HDH auction at Spiaggia (Chicago, IL): Funky, earthy, and a little bit of a lambic quality. Dirty and really not my cup of tea. A big question mark here.

Pepe's 1995 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is showing beautifully, opening in the glass with an inviting bouquet of balsamic cherries, dark chocolate, espresso roast, rich soil tones and subtle hints of Indian spices. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy while remaining fine-boned, its sun-kissed core of fruit is framed by powdery tannins and underpinned by lively acids. This shares the ripeness of fruit that characterizes sunny vintages such as 1997, but it's a touch racier and more dynamic by comparison.

Big disappointment. Held carefully in a cellar for ten years. Great anticipation and it is oxidized (not intentionally - I've had beautiful other bottles). The cork does seem mighty short for these long lived wines. Bummer.

Same as the 12/12/09 bottle except a touch more mature. This was the 8th disappointing bottle out of 9 purchased from MacArthurs Beverage in Wash. DC in 1999.
