Metallic "penny roll" nose with red fruits, earth, and VA. Lighter bodied, with good lift and acidic backbone. Rioja-like in its brick oven flavors. Nice.

While the wife's away, the boys will play. Nice wines at Keith's. (Keith's): Emidio Pepe's like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get. These wines are maddeningly inconsistent. Too often you're greeted with dirty socks and runaway VA, but then there are the times, like this time, when you get a beautiful, fresh and delicious wine. It's shockingly fruit forward. In fact, most of us were calling it grapey. The acidity is integrated nicely and is keeping the fruit in check without throwing a temper tantrum. Nicely spicy with licorice notes and a black fruit profile. Just a surprisingly youthful and clean showing. I wish they showed like this more frequently. Solid A-.

My bottle was past its prime. Decanted, and visited occasionally over a long evening with other wines. Really was 4-5 hours after decant before it was drinkable - before then the funk was too funky. After that, really nice, good acidity, earth. Paired great with ripe funky cheese. But a couple hours later it was dead, over the cliff. Glad I caught its last moment.

MPD dinner at Nell’s. Corked. Finish is peppery and beautiful. What it could have been.
