  • 5th of 6. This bottle shows loads of acidity - perhaps even VA. I've had it open now for 3 days, and it is a bit more palatable, but I think I'll hold my last one for 10 more years to see if the acidity (and oak) will integrate more. On the nose and palate, the oak overwhelms the delicious fruit. The tannins are fine and linger, but don't dry out the palate. I think there is a chance that this will be amazing in 10-30 years, but it's somewhat hard to drink right now.

  • Tight. Hints of new oak. The structure is very forward with long stringy tannin. I'm thinking that tannin is from the oak in large part. Strong acidity. The fruit is a bit plush and polished but not a lot of extraction or richness. This lives pretty well over three nights open but the oak starts showing more. It comes off like a bit closed yet not very classic. Which is in sharp contrast to the '06. I'd recommend holding but don't expect a classic Bordeaux. Comes off as at least partly modern.

  • This is an elusive wine. When I opened it, it smelled strongly of stewed fruits, and tasted thin and acidic, so I worried that it was over the hill. After an hour in a decanter, the stewed fruit smell had vanished, replaced by much more appetizing aromas of spice and tobacco, which became richer and more pronounced through the evening. The acidity was still predominant through the first half of the bottle, suggesting that the wine is too young rather than too old, but a dark-fruited sweetness emerged in the last glassful. The 2006 Millery was fully ready to drink in December. This vintage needs at least another year or two, at least.

This was one full bottle shared between two people, so we could experience the evolution of the wine over the course of the evening. Any attempt to describe or rate the wine based on a small glassful would be misleading.

  • This has aged well. Though I might have guessed it was even older than it is, based on the very slight vinegar-like flavor. Overall very nicely balanced with medium everything: tannins, acid, body, flavor.

  • Somehow not as good as my last bottle.
