  • Faint green apple with some smoky diesel. Somewhat flat and lacking the vibrancy I nearly always find with Willi Schaefer. It was nice but ho-hum.

  • Glass: Zalto Universal
Popped and poured, drunk over three days. Clear, deep golden color. Clean, medium+ intense, developing nose with notes of vanilla, ripe apricot. With time and air the wine gets fresher and notes of ripe lime, chalky mineral notes and hints of petrol appear. Beautiful and fresh.
On the palate medium-sweet with a high, mouth-watering acidity that is first a bit masked by the sweetness but is absolutely present. Only 7,5% abv.
Again ripe lemon, lots of yellow stone fruit, some herbs, everything mixed with a chalky mineral core. Fresh, with the typical Schaefer balance and harmony. Very round and quiet, but with a beautiful tension, texture and great pleasure to drink. Long, fruity and mineral finish, that lingers for seconds. As this bottle was best after three days, there is no need to hurry. 93-94.

  • Opened one hour in advance. Diffuse honey aroma with stone fruit. Flavors of peach, minerals. Apricot nectar finish. Decent backbone, attractive flavors, some complexity, but overall a little lackluster. Enjoyable, but I'm assuming it's capable of better and it's either getting tired, or just having a bad night.

  • Glass: Zalto Universal
Popped and poured, drunk over three days. Awesome wine, but unfortunately slightly corked. The great depth, pressure and raciness made me drink the whole bottle. Without the cork taint for sure around 95+. What a pitty…

  • After a disappointing bottle a few months ago, good to have one that's back on form. Surprisingly Saar-like with lots of green flavours here - green apple, pear, and ripe citrus, in contrast to the riper red apple/peachy fruit in the '01 and '08 Schaefers that accompanied this. There's tremendous cut and energy on the palate, moderate sweetness buffered by bright acidity, and a long finish. Lovely wine.
