  • WineBerserkers dinner (Chicago, IL): #12-98. Likely heat-damaged. This was far more advanced than it ought to have been.

  • Beautiful nose of honey, mango, lemon, white fruits over a delicate silky honeyed palate. A bit porty and heavy emphasis on the honey weight, but very delicious. I wonder if this is a bit past prime though.

  • Online Blind Tasting #7: 1997 Horizontal: Note is based on a tasting sip in the morning on day one, ~4cl on the evening and 0,1l filled in a bottle and sealed with argon gas on the evening of day three.
    Glass: Zalto Universal
Clear, youthful medium golden color. Clean, medium+ intense, developing nose. Ripe lemon, some petrol, rock flour, herbaceous. Fresh and very deep. Lovely!
Off-dry, the sweetness beautifully balanced by the ripe and racy acidity. Only 7,5% abv. On the palate power without weight and a wonderful freshness. Ripe lemon, fine yellow stone fruit, fresh garden herbs, wonderful mineral core. Quite expressive for a Schaefer wine with great tension. But it also has the wonderful balance, that I admire so much. Long and lingering finish, very fruity and multi-layered. Potential for another decade, but I can’t imagine how it can get any better… 93-94

  • Day 2. Full throttle and mature - apples, cinnamon, lemon, lime, lots of spices, minerals. Both rich and bright - a lot going on. Some creaminess. Wow - this enters well, tons of flavor and acid and brightness. On entry this has the perfect blend of sweetness and acid, of energy and maturity. Green apple, red apple, baked apple, spices, lemon, vanilla cream. As the palate develops this dries out quite a bit - going a bit out of balance - there is a pulse of lime and then the dryness sets in. The finish is drier - baked apple, lime, minerals, spices - mostly high notes and low notes with a little missing in the middle. This is probably a bit past plateau and will slowly decline for 15 years. Still excellent. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

  • Sweet wine tasting (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein): Clear, youthful medium golden color. Wonderful fresh nose, with fine crushed stones and fine yellow stone fruit. Young and complex.
On the palate perfect harmony and balance, but also pressure and tension. Astonishingly young and fresh with a lively, ripe acidity. Delicate ripe fruit, some herbs mixed with fine crushed stones. Long and lingering finish. This bottle is at its peak and has at least another decade ahead! 93-94
