  • Celebrating my birthday last evening with a home cooked meal, including a grilled ribeye steak. Chose this big boy to celebrate. A wine I've had several times and rated 96+. Surprisingly, this 17 yr old bottle was well past it's prime with almost no fruit. Prominent tertiary flavors. Palate of dried dark fruit, worn dusty leather, dried tobacco, dried mushroom, balsamic, and some oak in the background. Still enjoyable to drink but not at the normal level.

  • Squarely in its drinking window. May be at peak, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it improved from here. Splash decanted and checked in over the first hour as it opened up. Was ready to go by the 1-1.5 hour mark. Dark fruit with lots of tertiary notes coming through strong. Tobacco, chocolate and leather. Plenty of tannins to hold up to a wagyu steak but after an hour of so these softened enough to make this a fantastic drink even without food. Really beautiful.

  • This was my favorite in a tasting of ~15 Brunellos at an enoteca in Montalcino 5 years ago. After a little more age, it was still as wonderful as I remember. It opened up nicely, and was certainly not too old. I might worry about holding it to 2029. While not a classic wine pairing, I thought it went well with our fried zucchini flowers.

  • Despite being stored at 55 F/12.8 C its whole life, this bottle was well past its prime. Smelling strong aromas of manure and wet cardboard, I first assumed it was spoiled. It was not; the flavors after 30 minutes were decent if you don't want a fruit-forward wine. There was some barnyard and some vegetable quality to it. The best opinion was, "It isn't terrible." Should have sold this one. No score as it didn't compare at all to recent reviews.

  • A lot going on in this bottle right now. Slow ox'd for 4 hours then drank in a tasting over 3 hours. It evolved throughout the evening, but unfortunately vacillated between balanced/pleasing/interesing and over-vegetal. At about the 2-hour mark, it settled into a slightly over-vegetal state which was mildly off-putting compared to the winner of the night which was a 2001 Altesino Montosoli. The Montosoli had a more pleasing array of scents and flavors. I wonder what my impression would have been had I drank the bottle without comparisons.
