Greg's Birthday Dinner (Otto e Mezzo, Alexandra House, Central, Hong Kong): A 5-hour decant, which it needs to show its best. Dense and opaque purple-red colour but freshening at the edges. Nose is deep mahogany furniture, milk chocolate, white nougat, mocha coffee, fresh blackcurrents and fresh blackberries, pencil lead.....really complex and beguiling. Palate is really fresh, jeweled cut in the mouth with similar sensations to the nose but near-dominated in a good way by the enormous mounting and irresistable resonance that is totally head-filling with the following reverberance on the finish. Lots of deep and heavy Bach cathedral organ notes here. Fantastic......I treasure my few remaining bottles.

Notes from day 1, bottle open for 3 hours or so. Dark red to purple in color. Nose of rainer cherry, little floral, worn saddle leather, eucalyptus, coffee Palate of red cherry, licorice, coffee grounds, worn leather, herb, spicey tannin. The finish was long in length, good structure and acidty. Overall the wine was very solid overall, continued to improve with additional airation. Drink or Hold: 50+5+13+17+7 4
Made the list this go round so it seemed appropriate to open one of the bottles I accumulated while waiting. Big long cork in fine condition. Light sediment. Wine was dark black. Nose was not pronounced, certainly no funk. Medium bodied, palate leaning more to red fruit. Good acidity, medium finish. It was very enjoyable and not the viscous bomb I somehow expected. That's a good thing.

Bacon, bell peppers, ivy, red cherries, lots of minerals, red berries. A rather cool wine and bit funky in the nose but very clear in the palate.

A little funk on opening but it smooth out to reveal dark fruit with good density.
