  • Magnificent. Very complex with wonderful plum flavors. Oh, why didn't I buy a case?

  • Friday, August 08, 2003 Color: a black hole. No, I mean, no light escaped this. Set the glass over white paper or turn the glass on its side, it doesn’t matter. My wife commented that from across the room, it looked like a glass of ink. Some blood-red appeared in a thin line on the rim. The wine was like the night very dark ... as a violent storm settled over the Valley and flooded homes and businesses. Nose: Brett, plum on the nose. And something funky, not sure what. This wine is a noseful. It’s almost as if the tannins jump out at you. Palate: More plum and some brett flavors followed by blackberry (not blackberry jam or spread, but blackberries as you’re picking them with the initial sweetness and quick, tart aftertaste.) A tad bit of anise. Some bitter, baking chocolate flavor lingers a little near the end. The tannins are big on this wine. In fact, they’re almost bruising. For such a bad year for Va. wine, this wine has big tannins and without any greenness. The finish is somewhat short and ends on a pine resin-like note. None of the flavors are long or particularly focused. I simply could not get over the color and tannins of this wine. Not a great wine, but an interesting wine. Without a doubt, the best Va. Norton I’ve had. 13.1% alc. With cheeses and crusty bread while watching Father’s Little Dividend.
