Surprisingly don’t feel like aged burgundy. Probably due to a strong burgundy vintage. The wine evolve in the glass and actually improve over 4 hours. Pronounced nose intensity with notes of pepper, charr wood, toast, spices, cinnamon, ripe red fruits. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Tannin integrated.

1 of 5 decanted @ 3:00 served @ 7:30 Big, dark core needs air. This was in early maturity, rich, dense fruit. Fine tannins rich texture, balanced acidity, long finish. This improved over the evening. This will last another 10-20 years

2019 Visit to North Canterbury, NZ: Served double blind with the 1999 Bachelet Charmes. From the contents of the glass alone, no suggestion of terroir or link with the 1999 Bachelet Charmes. But, if you know the house style, unmistakably Dugat-Py Grand Cru. A powerful, deep bouquet of dark berries and cherries, cloves, road tar, soy and dark spices. Traces of toasty oak frame the aromas. On palate, power, huge tannic structure and persistent acids. Tight and primary for a 20 year old wine. Depth and serious concentration. Black fruit, liquorice, cloves, espresso and earth. No doubt it will improve with more cellar time. It may not reach its peak until 40 years after vintage! However, as someone who likes the house style (with sufficient cellaring), I thought this was a brilliant wine.

This showed so well and was certainly on the wild and ripe side of things. Quite tangy and rich with the classic wild cherry and mineral content of mature Charmes but the finish is surprisingly complex and elegant. Delicious and while it will age for a long time, I liked it tonight after 2 hours of air.

Charmes dinner. Big, fruity, not exactly subtle but tasty. Dark cherry palate.
