  • Reviewing 2009 Barolo (2nd Event) (Mario's House - Madrid): Modernity has settled and will not go away. Rough, closed, where the wood sticks out everywhere preventing other aromas from manifesting. From my humble point of view you must wait a while or just avoid all about this bottle.

La modernidad se ha asentado y no va a irse. Rudo, cerrado, donde la madera sobresale por todas partes impidiendo a otros aromas manifestarse. Desde mi punto de vista se debe esperar un tiempo o sencillamente olvidarse de esta botella.

  • Fermented with the skins for 10 days. Aged in partly new and partly used French oak barriques for 24 months, blended together into a concrete tank where the wine is aged for further 6 months, bottled and aged for another 6 months before release. 13,5% alcohol.

Somewhat translucent figgy reddish color. Somewhat closed nose with restrained, sweet-toned aromas of juicy dark berries, some plummy tones, a little bit of toasty oak spice and a jammy hint of cherry marmalade. The wine is dry, medium-bodied and quite dark-toned on the palate with rather pronounced sour cherry bitterness, ripe plummy dark fruit, some chocolatey oak, a little bit of wizened dark fruits, a hint of mocha and a touch of prune. The alcohol tastes through a little. Overall the wine is nicely structured for a 2009 Barolo with its high acidity and firm, moderately grippy tannins. The finish is quite tannic and noticeably bitter with pronounced sour cherry and tart lingonberry tones along with some peppery spice, a little bit of raisiny fruit and quite rough astringency.

Although this wine was surprisingly structured for a 2009 Barolo, it still lacked balance and finesse quite a bit: the oak treatment is much more noticeable than I'd care for and although not extremely tannic (like a young Barolo could be), the wine felt rather rough and at times almost unpalatable with its rough, unbalanced bitterness which made me think more of a West Coast IPA than a Nebbiolo. Furthermore, the hot vintage is pretty obvious in those raisiny and dried-fruit flavors. The wine seems to be capable to take on some longer-term cellaring and aging might integrate some of those oakier tones, but I doubt any aging is going to rid the wine of its raisiny flavors and excessive bitterness. Despite being surprisingly acid-driven for a 2009 Barolo, I really can't find myself enjoying this wine.
