  • Ruby red and pale rose at the edges. Strawberry, raspberry, and smoke on the nose. Same notes on the palate with typical Pinot tension. Nice interplay among acid, alcohol, and tannins. Savory and mouth-watering finish. Very nice bottle. Drinking well now. (89-90).

  • This is a well made new world Pinot Noir. Not having drunk much of any Kiwi Pinot, I would have assumed this was from California. There’s a density and concentration that I’ve experienced in CA Pinots, as well as some exuberant blue fruit, a very slight sensation of sweetness, and a chocolate-vanilla infusion of oak (which is certainly present here but doesn’t whack you over the head).

Underlying this, though, is an interesting herbaciosuness, with some black pepper and perhaps just a hint of vegetable character. There is also some structure provided by resolved (but somehow still slightly astringent) tannins and just enough acid to balance out the substantial body (14.5% ABV).

This is well made in many respects, though the slight astringency (it is subtle) deters from the coherence. It’s not totally my style, and I’m usually a little confused by these dense, boozy pinots. I’ll be so bold as to say this isn’t just a personal preference: It just never strikes me as a good expression of the grape. You could tell me this was Syrah, and I wouldn’t be terribly surprised.

  • Decent pinot. Subdued fruit, somewhat astringent tannins. Very typical of what we found from this region when we went wine tasting there.

  • I would say this is rather representative of the Pinot Noirs we tasted from this region. Fruit is strawberry but somewhat subdued and astringent if not austere.

  • What a wonderful bottle. Very fragrant with raspberry, cinnamon candy, fresh forest, and oak. Concentrated, but precise and bright. Full and moderately firm. No rough edges. Not complex, but very well balanced and intense. Boy, these Kiwis are making some fine Pinot. (91-93pts.)
