  • Opened and decanted 1 hour prior. Cork only just wet at end. Quite a medicinal nose, but wonderfull complex flavours, liquorice, dark chocolate and berry fruit. A great CNDP at 30 years old.

  • Pulled cork 3 hours before drinking. Cork was in terrible shape: wet with molding on top. Drinking perfectly however. Evolving nose from leather to slate. Wine was a bit simple at first, but opened up after 2 hours and held well through the night, much to my surprise. Time to drink it obviously, and maybe a bit past its prime, but a very enjoyable wine.

  • Châteauneuf-du-Pape Dinner: This smells beautiful. Very pretty, soft floral aromas. Some earth, but it's dusty. Leather, but no funk at all. Beautiful. The palate is nice, pretty and soft, with mild grittiness. Some older funk here, with plenty of acid remaining, with nice dancing cherry fruit. Really pretty finish, which is soft and lightly earthy. Really lovely stuff, with acidity lingering long with light cherry fruit. Even lingers a minute after swallowing. A beautiful old Châteauneuf, and a page from the history books when compared to the extractive modern stuff...

  • Ex from Johnny Apple's passively cooled cellar. Still some color, brick at the edges. Disappointing the first day, with most of the fruit seemingly gone from the scene and a tannic backbone the most prominent facet. After 24 hours in a 34 degree refrigerator, having come to temperature, it was a different wine. Still not altogether in tune, but more balanced; in fact oxygen seemed to enliven it and the tannins receded to let it show. I look forward to the other three bottles, betting that at least one is altogether very good. Storage an issue?
