  • Take with a grain of salt as this was consumed arguably a decade to 15 years after it's best drinking window. But very, very interesting. First, it lasted. Cork was 2/3rd dry, 1/3rd saturated. It broke during opening but did not crumble and the second piece was small and remained intact in bottle. We strained into decanter.

No observable sediment on edges of wine bottle. Very little in bottle. Appearance was translucent, not vibrant but not dulled. Still some ruby. No brown. A little orange at edge but nothing tremendous. Looked like an older wine certainly but not an aged wine. 6

Aromas were some red currant and a bit of hoja santa at the front. Back end of the wine has plenty of funk. Healthy funk, though. Burgundy not brett. No diesel or taint of VA in my opinion. 8

Palatte was pretty simple. Good fruit not great. Berry. Funk at finish. Not a lot of length. Supple. Nice body. No noticeable acid or tannin remains. It's far from lively but its not flat. 15

While not typical, the fact it made it this long proves something about the ageworthiness and how well made this wine was. 10

    6 + 8 + 15 + 10

On to try the one remaining 2002 I have next.

  • Apparently I had another bottle lying around... This one is better than last time. The nose on this wine is beautiful! I get some classic cola-like scents along with some barnyard funk that suggests this isn't a young wine.

The palate isn't quite as nice as the nose, but isn't bad either. It has a little tangy, orange-like quality that is a bit strange, but not bad. My guess is that this bottle should have been opened about 5 years ago, but even today it's OK.

  • Been holding on to this wine for a while thinking it would be a marathon runner. I was wrong. CellarTracker says the end drinking date was about 8 years ago, and I should have listened.

If a wine's life follows a standard normal distribution curve, this wine is about 3 standard deviations on the wrong side of good. I'm sure it was once a great wine, but today I got some fizz / carbonation and a very muted nose. If you have a bottle, open it now and cross your fingers.

Not giving this wine a score because it would be like looking at Zse Zse Gabor today and trying to decide if she was good looking way back when....

  • Outstanding. Still full of fruit and body. Color was still young. I was very surprised that this wine held up as it did. No hurry to drink it.
