What a surprise, didn’t expect a Syrah from Portugal. Very pretty floral nose, elegant sweet fruit from the hotter climate that pointed me to new world. Drinking youthfully now but not sure if it’ll develop any further. Still good in its own right but a little overshadowed by the other two on the night.

Dinner at Belcanto Chef's Table (Lisbon, Portugal): Allegedly one of the best terroirs for Syrah here in Portugal. Feels a bit too extracted and oaky to me. Bit of rancid butter/old wood on nose. I'm a Northern Rhone snob, so I want my Syrah lighter-bodied, and this has far too much heft for me. I can also appreciate domestic Syrah like, say, from Failla or Edmunds St John, but this is too much for my palate.

96% Syrah, 4% viognier,. Typical northern Rhone /cote rotie blend ,. This proceder is Syrah par excellence in Portugal. Perfumed, ripe, full of spice. Black fruits, earthy, leather, woody. Ripe cherry, plum, strawberry. Silky, floral, perfume, sweet spice. Cinnamon, clove, chocolate, but not at all sweet. Palate is more tertiary, earthy, leather, cooked fruits, prune, fig. Some vanilla, toast, wood, sweet spice. Dried fruits. Olives.
Absolutely excellent wine. Just lacking a bit in overall concentration and finish. If the same wine were from the northern Rhone/cote rotie , France it would sell for many times the price it currently sells for.

Really delicious wine. Lots of dark fruits, really dense but not over the top. Plum, black cherry, prune, fig. Tertiary notes of tobacco, leather, meat, earthy. Notes of chocolate, coffee, cherry liqueur - though never sweet, always restrained. Really good, super price. Can hold longer.
