Hazy notes from last night's crab dinner. Lovely butterscotch notes on the nose, and lots of minerals and a bit of citrus and nutty fruit on the rather light palate. This wasn't oxidized, but was perhaps a little advanced. Elegant and understated style (A-).

This note encompasses two bottles consumed in the last 3 weeks. I opened the first one fearing infantacide, but what I found was a wine that was much more advanced than I would have expected. Light golden hue. next to a 2004 Raveneau 1er cru (which was crystalline) this looked like it would have been 5-10 years older. Also showed some interesting secondary development that surprised me for a 2002 1er cru from old vines. However, this said, the wine was very good. Great lemony citric zing, just a bit of lovely creaminess. Good steely character. It is just coming along surprisingly fast...

Christian Moreau, one of the leading figures in Chablis, is producing the wines he loves under his own name. Free of any personal involvement with the negociant company that his family founded and sold, with his son Fabien they founded Domaine Christian Moreau Pére et Fils in 2001 and set up their winemaking operation in the very heart of the Chablis country, at the foot of its famous Grands Cru vineyards.
It's drinking pretty well right now and not as tight as I would've suspected, so not a problem to consume the entire bottle on a nice summer evening with some rich chevre. Pale gold, green glinting, a soft viscous cling. The nose is bright and light, nothing slamming out at you just some pears, nuts and limes. On the palate was where I really enjoyed this, lots of chalky and flinty minerals, sleek acid and a nice full finish of leesy body and complexity. Nice classic Chablis finesse, very delightful to drink.

(Christian Moreau Chablis 1er Cru "Vaillon 'Cuvee Guy Moreau'") Seems a little less focused than the Vaillon regular cuvee. Fleshier and riper but still has great mineral strength. Good but I prefre the regular Vaillon. A touch boring if I dare say.

This was showing nicely, with lemon, lots of minerals and hint of butterscotch on the balanced palate. Classic chablis (A-).
