Pale garnet; spirity, iodine, inky, fragrant yet with a certain rigidity; elegant yet a contradictory unyielding hardness. It dances across the palate but ultimately flatters to deceive. Will clearly age but just home much real satisfaction will this provide. In the end, disappointing. A generous rating, more in hope thamn expectation.

With the WE tasting group. I've been waiting for a good time to pull the cork on this, the only Nacional I have had the opportunity to taste. This seemed like a good time. Roy Hersh's notes on this one (he scores it an 87) essentially state that it's not one of his favorite vintages of Nacional. Although I can certainly see why, this was still a very enjoyable VP. It was quite feminine and delicate, and obviously ready to drink. The nose did have a slight "green" quality to it, which detracted. One of the members of the group, who has previously tasted two other vintages of Nacional (which he described as very deep and intense), noted what he called a "rootiness" to the wine, an element he has found in Bollinger's Vieille Vignes Francaises (he's a true Champagne nut!). I thought it was a very interesting observation since they both come from ungrafted vines. This one also had a very slight bit of seepage. Six out of fourteen votes for WOTN.

Refined chocolate and cherry notes. Some menthol and violet. Alcohol shows through. Close to mature. Enjoyable, more elegantly styled Nacional.

Deep ruby red. Forwar aroma of brandy and red wine. This was probably a bad bottle. Nothing special. 2/05
