A private tasting (Restaurant Merkelbach, Amsterdam, NL): Selected by Ellis Son & Vidler, London SW1. Light tawny colour. Stalky, raw, estery nose; rich and chocolaty palate, sweet but a bit raw: does have weight and length. A less than perfect bottle?

Christmas Wines; 12/24/2010-12/25/2010: Decanter 4 hours. Old ruby color with some amber mixing in. Clear with no bricking. Grandma's potpourri in an old mahogany drawer, dark rum-soaked raisins, and a full range of sweet baking spices are but a few of the aromatic elements. The flavors feature candied and cooked fruits, molasses with notes of citrus zest and fruit cake. The wine is rich without being heavy, warming without being hot. The finish seems eternal. All in all a lovely cup of Christmas cheer. By day 2 in the decanter this is showing more like a wonderful old Tawny and the spirit has come more to the foreground. Drink now through 2020.

Darker color, super smooth, good palate feel, alcohol on the finish, time in the bottle.
