Pale green color. Expressive and a bit wild nose with complex aromas of ripe red apples, perfumed white flowers, some funky farmhouse cider notes, a little bit of earthy complexity and spice and a hint of stony minerality. The wine is bone-dry and extremely tightly-knit on the palate with piercing, electric acidity and extremely intense flavors of almost unripe green apples, wild cidery notes, lemony citrus fruits, some wet stone minerality, a little bit of sponti spiciness and a hint of smoke. The finish is long, crisp and a bit smoky with juicy flavors of red apples, lemony citrus fruits, some earthy spices, a little bit of wild complexity and a hint of slatey minerality.
Stylistically very similar to the stunning 2009 vintage I tasted a year earlier, but whereas the previous vintage was a remarkable combination of ripeness and austerity, this wine doesn't show much ripeness - only bracing acidity and minerality. The 2009 was very approachable already, but showing good aging potential - this wine, on the other hand, is only about cellaring potential! The wine is so freakishly tightly wound it will take several years before it starts to unwind. This is very impressive and lovely stuff, but doesn't reach the heights of 2009 vintage (this is one of the rare instances I'm in favor of a hot vintage over a cooler one). However, I can imagine that this wine can score higher once it reaches its apogee - and I'm sure it will take a lot more time for the wine to hit it. Terrific stuff, very highly recommended.
