French but no Burgundy/Bordeaux theme: My contribution. Everyone guessed northern Rhone for this, but not sure if I understood why. Didn’t have any Loire greenness despite the weaker vintage, but was built more like a traditional Bordeaux from a more classic vintage with some leafy herbal notes. Pleasurable and drinking at peak now.

On first sip before food, this was quite full for Chinon with savoury ivy tinged fruit, quite strong acidity and still marked tannins. However, after a mouthful of marbled Hereford beef and peppery Mediterranean vegetables, the fruit became more gracious and the tannins riper seeming and just right to cope with the food. This is a classy wine with a pairing which softens the rather austere 2004 style. Very good.

This wine has a severity which is not typical of Chinon or even of Dioterie itself, but is typical of the vintage. My previous bottle was opened about 5 years ago and, while the aromas have opened up somewhat since then, the wine's austere character is unchanged. Palate was medium+ bodied, showing savoury fruit, earthy minerals, fresh tangy and leathery acidity encased in still marked tannic structure. Blind, I would take this for a robust bougeois left bank claret from a cool vintage. There is none of the gracious elegance which I associate with Dioterie's best vintages. Good in its way, though.

After opening some green notes, herbal, with green bell pepper notes, meaty, some mushrooms with wet earth, not really clean. With air it’s getting better: dark morello fruit, tobacco, still some bell pepper notes, earth, pretty good for a 2004.

Bell pepper, green notes, a lot of soil. You can see the class of this wine, but it is simply reduced by the vintage.
