  • Medium ruby color. Red and black cherry, some tar, dusty tannins, definitely oak. Well balanced, but lacking the complexity of a good DOCG or a Barolo I. The same price range. No sign of age and plenty of life ahead - easily through 2023 if not longer. 14% abv.

  • Bottle off the wine list at Famous Treasure Capitol. Pop and poured. Drank over 1.5 hours. Somm had suggested decanting but this was good to go right away.
Appearance was generally clear with occasional sediment, pale intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of floral rose, tar, licorice, iron earth, balsamic mint, red cherries, hint of vanilla toast with more air. Developed.
On the palate, dry, very high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.5%), high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, tar, licorice, iron earth, fresh leather, bits of toasted wood spice with more air. Very long tannic finish that is balanced by the lovely acidic cut.
Very good quality. Super solid Langhe Nebbiolo. Drinking well now and over the next 2+ years.
From young vines under 15 years of age in the Bussia Cru in the commune of Monforte d'Alba. Only 1 week of maceration. Spends 18 months in small, all-new French barriques.
But overall does not feel too modern to me. The underlying fruit materiale is still traditional, with some modern elements enhancing the overall picture the way make-up should be correctly applied.

  • By the glass at La Strada. Young, but this was pretty good, pairing well with both a white truffle pasta as well as a beautifully cooked dish of Iberico pork belly - perhaps even better with the pork than with the Alba truffles. The wine had a very nice, perfumed nose to it, with wafts of rose petals and just that little hint of tarry smoke floating over sweet red berry aromas with a touch of earthy brush herbs at the side. The palate, while still a pleasure to drink, was rather less outwardly attractive. It was certainly a bit too young, with zesty orange acidity and a little dusting of fine tannins the first thing to grab you. Beyond that though, there were nice, pure notes of red fruit littered with sprigs of herb and then some warm spice as the wine slid into a gentle finish. A bit simple maybe and clearly made in a more modern, easily accessible style, but it was very pleasant and friendly. While it lacked the depth of a say a good Barolo or Babaresco, it made a nice food wine and certainly came across as well made for an entry level wine. Not really one for aging, but it should be better in 3-4 years as well.
