Textbook aged Barolo, with ample tar, licorice and faded roses in the complex aromas. palate was dry and savory, with warm fruit and mineral notes. Lovely, glad I held this bottle to 21 years of age. and this was supposedly a bad vintage.

I'm pretty sure this is what older Barolo is supposed to be like. At first, astringent and a bit reluctant, then with an hour of air, fleshed out and amazing aromas of tar and licorice, like a barrel of melted licorice, as Kirk said. Fleshed out on the palate as well, showing good acidity, cherry and rosepetals, but still very firmly tannic. From a poor vintage, it probably won't get better, but it still was a pleasure to drink.

With age, this wine is shedding its harsh acidity and now shows evocative aromas of roses, licorice and tar. Best with food.
