  • Vajra is a serious producer and the wines are well worth seeking out, even if distribution is a little spotty here in the Tri-State metro-winopolis. The '02 vintage was problematic in the Piedmont, following an unprecedented string of successful vintages. It's my understanding that this version of the Vajra Langhe was spiked with declassified barolo. What a treat for $13! The nose is ablaze with cranberry and cherry fruit, leather, and tar. Medium bodied, it rocks with fruit in a way that might be considered unseemly in a more serious nebbiolo, but who says you can't just enjoy the hell out of a nebbiolo-based wine without having to enshrine it in the annals of vini di meditazione? As of right now I'm officially on the prowl for Vajra's other wines.
