A thinker’s wine, not much fruit, a bit of lime zest, powdered chalk, waxy almost like a savennieres, leesy notes, harmonious well integrated acid, plenty of focus, and really nice to drink, but more on the side of intellectual pleasure than sensuous pleasure.

A private lunch (Restaurant Nathan Outlaw **, Port Isaac, UK): Aged sur lie in underground concrete tanks for 10 years. Intense but bright colour - that flourescent greenish white gold which some Rieslings also have; the complex and deep nose is not easy to pin down, with subtle notes of aromatic green herbs, tropical fruit and hints of yeast and lowland malt; the palate is soft but fresh, dry but silky and supple, juicy and rounded, much more savoury than a normal Muscadet; finishes with a light sea breeze, good length. Completely ready, drink now - 2020.

Sheekey pre-Theatre (This House at the Garrick). Another interesting wine off their list. Some viscosity, a core of rounded grapefruit, the merest hint of oxidation in the background that didn't distract from the much more prominent chalky minerality and dry finish. They also sell the current (2015) vintage. Would be fascinating to compare and contrast. Very good indeed, idiosyncratic, but possibly a year or two past its best? Will certainly not improve - drink up.

A very subtle and excellent wine. More intensity to this than other Muscadet. Lime and saline are the most profound tastes.

Some Eclectic, Spectacular Wines; 8/13/2017-8/14/2017 (Santa Ynez Valley): Pale chiffon in the glass. Clean and inviting nose of melon and orange oil that somehow meshed well. Savory palate, with notes of citrus, chalk and saline. Fine acidity. Very refreshing.
