  • 100% Carricante from 60 year old vines on volcanic soils 600-650 meter above sea level. Carricante is a high acid grape that has been growing in Etna, Sicily for centuries.

Low temperature fermentation in various sized French oak and then aged in French oak barriques for 10 months. ~666 cases made.

Citrusy. Minerally. But subtle on the nose and elegant, slightly oily on the palate. Don’t sense the oak much at all. It’s a good wine, but a bit disappointed that there wasn’t more complexity to this given the age. Perhaps it was better younger with more fruit and intensity. I revisited it a couple days later. More secondary and tertiary notes were prominent with caramel, spice, toasty notes as well as bitter almond. The wine also gained more body and texture but lost acidity. I’m still not sure how much I like aged whites. In this case, I imagine I’d prefer it younger when it was at its most minerally and acidic.

  • As in my tasting note from earlier in 2022, this Etna Bianco, is now tiring and lacking in energy. It's still drinkable, just, to me anyway, and based on these two bottles, now past its best. Time to drink up.

  • Carricante 100%, vines from 15 to 30 years. Typical production: 6 tons per hectare. Volcanic, extremely stony, shallow soil, very rich in sand with exposure the north side of Etna, from 600 to 650 meters above sea level. Fermented and aged in 10-hectolitre barrels.

A good but not, based on this bottle, a top Etna Blanc. Quite deep gold colour. A bouquet of peaches and pears, limes and grapefruit, oyster shell, smoke and soft florals. Some lactic nuances and spices. Rich and full on palate, lemon and grapefruit with some pineapple and rock melon notes. A little honeyed and tactile. Seemingly lower acidity. The oak and alcohol (only 12.5% ABV) well integrated. Some salty minerality on the dry finish. Seemingly a little lacking in energy and tired. Well into, and perhaps beyond, its optimal drinking window. I'd drink soon and by around 2025 at the latest.

  • Mature hue, quince eucalyptus. Oily texture quite balanced. Nice depth silky texture. Gentle with light tertiary notes. Lost his peak ?
