  • Decanted for 30mins or so which seemed about right. Wide array of mixed berries with a tendency towards darker forest berry fruit. Sweet notes of vanilla, a bit of earth and leather, cedar wood and tobacco. Dense and packed with flavors on the palate, soft tannin, unfortunately couldn’t help but noticing a bit of heat. This still youthful, but highly enjoyable.

  • This was part of a "Wines you never had before" tasting I organised for a handful of fellow wine aficionados. The goal was to showcase unusual grapes and regions in all price brackets. My, and the crowd's, wine of the night was the 2014 Ao Yun (China Cab) although Maria Teresa from Quinta do Crasto and VioRous from Kongsgaard went down well as well.

Broad range of fruits from dark and blue berries to some red cherry types as well, but without pushing too much into the limelight. A host of complementary aromatics including some minerality, green herbs (dried and fresh), faint pepper, black tea and vanilla. Fascinatingly versatile over time in the glass – hardly surprising given 49 known varieties in the mix (of which 3 whites, 1 unknown!!) from a field blend originally intended for port production 100 years ago in the Douro valley. A nice fruity and even a bit jamy palate with fine tannins and a delicate and round structure. 30min decant but 1-2h would probably do no harm either. The runner-up for me in the line-up.

  • An Evening of Oddballs and Curiosities: Tasted blind and quite hard to figure out... but no surprise with at least 49 different varieties in the bottle. I went for a Grenache dominated blend from Priorat due to the dominating red fruit profile, even though it didn’t felt quite right. All in all, a positive surprise, nice, round and fresh but not as singular as a wine made from 49 varieties might suggest.

TN: Medium expressive nose displaying fresh strawberries and vanilla. On the palate a wall of tannins at the center which after 20 minutes turns into a well constructed of still noticeable but smooth tannins and a well-integrated, fine acidity providing enough lift to keep the wine balanced and fresh. Aromas of fresh strawberries, and other cool red fruit, fresh and some dried herbs, some fine oak tones. Medium complexity, medium+ precision, medium length.

Decanting: Got 30 minutes in the decanter, as it got better by the minute I would go for 2 hours at this point.
