  • Sometimes it's good to test your convictions. Here's one of mine: a lot of Napa cab is undrinkable: too heavy, too oaky, too alcoholic, too too. This does not mean they are bad wines!!!! It just means they aren't to my taste.

Tonight's exhibit A was all of the above from the nose on down. The oak was overpowering and even though the alcohol was a relatively mild 14.1% labeled, it added to an impression (depression?) of ponderous weight in the mouth. So much sweet blackberry fruit, that I really couldn't swallow more than a thimble-full at a time, and even that was a struggle. My wife summed up my distress with the perfect bon mot, "honey, it's not your jam."

A final interesting observation, at least to me. I happened to glance at the back label, which says it was "cellared and bottled by Polaner," a big East Coast importer, so one can assume this is a "negociant," wine of some sort, I guess. That leads me to believe it has been created specifically for a defined market served by Polaner. I can only assume they know who that is, but it ain't me babe.

  • Had this alongside a 2014 Daou Cab, and this was much better. Nice balance, smooth texture and not overdone. Actually very nice either by itself or with a steak. This is not as good as the 2012 Hardin, but still decent and well worth $20-25.

  • The wine is good and a great value, but my first bottle of the 2013 did not measure up to the 2012. I bought quite a bit of the 2012 and loved it. After my last order, the retailer called me and said they only had 2013 ... did I still want it? I figured 2013 is suppose to be great, so I'll give it a try. It had good flavors, but not the big structure I enjoyed in the 2012, and overall it was not as deep or vibrant. However, the nose which was muted, came alive after a couple of hours ... surprising amount of tobacco and licorice, which may bode well for the future development of the wine.. 88+

  • Sour Cherry, milk chocolate, pencil shavings, good intensity, big red fruit, cedar, and toast. Drying dusty tannins on the finish. Well made wine. Needs air.

  • Drink under the new gazebo during a light rain. Plum, blackberry with slight oak and tabacco.
