Worldwide Pinots (Sunfish Cellars, St. Paul, MN): Medium dark red color. Tasting pour. Dried earth, red fruit, subtle brett; the palate shows a fuller body, black raspberry, blackberry, funk, wood, a bit blousey and flabby, though it gets better over 20 minutes. Nose is better than palate. 88+pts.

Flatiron and Nopa (SF): Brett and lambic notes (possible bacterial issues?). Faded red fruit. Dry, medium body, medium plus alcohol, medium plus acid, low tannins.

This wine comes from the "Upper Bench" section of the Temperance Hill Vineyard, fermented in 2 barrels, one neutral and the other one year old. Purity is a tired wine descriptor, but it applies here. The raspberry and red cherry fruit is ripe, there is a fine layer of tannin, and the finish carries the fruit, a dried leaf note and a touch of spice from the barrel treatment. This is well done, drinkable now, and with promise for at least several years of development.

Division Winemaking Company Tasting (Doi Moi - DC): What a kicking aromatic package! I get tons of spice, pepper, earth, sage on top of deep cherries and event some blueberries. Juicy and medium-bodied on the palate, this has a bold tannic structure and fresh acidity. The deep core of fruit is full and lush, but the fruit is covered in a complex dusting of pepper, mushroom, earth, fallen leaves and clove. Pure and vibrant yet deep and savory. Not yet release, this wine is really interesting to taste young but it really needs to sleep for three or four years, as these tannins are not playing around.
