Big and beautiful bottle of juice. Nose was rich and leathery, all dark notes. Palate is chewy, dark, full of fruit, with a tart edge, and moderate tannins. An outstanding grape combination.

10 years in barrel is immediatley apparent with a pronounced smell of wood mixed with red fruit and hints of pepper/spice. Strong tannins but still balanced on the palate. Tastes of berries, hints of wood, and vanilla; also some surprising similarities to Nebbiolo but still a distinctly unique barbera.

Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume II (Chicago, IL): From magnum. A bit of a combo breaker tonight in that it's not a nebbiolo, but this was a brilliant wine in its own right. A very pleasant and intense fruit character here, as well as a fairly light palate presence. This doesn't show any oddness from the ten years in cask, and in fact, is probably the best barbera I've ever had. I suppose all that time really helped concentrate this wine and give it some serious density.

Really interesting wine. Barbera aged in neutral oak for 10 years. I wish I was able to get more of this.
Typical barbera fruit, dark berry, printers ink, but the oak regimen gave the wine higher tannins than normal, but retained the acidity and freshness of barbera, and really made the wine whole. This was an extraordinary complete wine; a barbera like no other that I have had.

A wine that was somewhat stern upon release but this bottle suggests it's now ready. Barbera resembling Barolo.
