Very much a dark fruit Noiré, with blackcurrants, white pepper and herbs on the nose for now, although I’m sure this will change with more time in the cellar. It’s a racier than usual Noiré, with a zip and a bite to the finish and 14% ABV, although this is ably balanced by the acidity and freshness. Riper than most 2014s, but without any hint of over-ripeness. Very much in its infancy still, but oodles of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry. Altogether very impressive.

Nez très fin, sur les petits fruits et épices. Il m’apparaît à maturité en bouche, avec des tanins policés et une impression de fraîcheur et légèreté. Excellent.

2014 Philippe Alliet Chinon Coteau de Noiré was aromatic, layered and savoury. The developing Cabernet Franc was clear and medium ruby in colour with some fine sediments. Perfume of blackberry, raspberry and celery were followed by tobacco leaf, pencil shavings and cocoa powder.
On the palate, it was dry and medium-bodied, with medium-high levels of integrated acidity and softening tannin. Flavours of red plum, forest berries and mint transitioned to graphite and grilled mushroom in a long, detailed finish. The 14% alcohol level was well-concealed. The empty bottle weighed 596 grams. It was among the best Chinon I have tasted, and it could easily rival top-notch Cabernet Franc-dominant blends from Bordeaux.
The Cabernet Franc vines are cultivated on a sleep south-facing slope composed of clay and limestone. The grapes are completely destemmed to tame down the vegetal characteristics, typically associated with Loire Cabernet Franc. The wine is raised in oak barrels, of which 25% are new.
