  • Opened after the 1997 Brunello we tried first wouldn't budge. Purchased on a recco and good price point. On opening, an odd sawdust/menthol note that flattened out some decadent fruit notes. With an hour, menthol/raisin, loam, rotting fruit, black cherry. Slightly muffled flavors of raisins, baked plums, prunes, dried cherries with attractive tarry notes before the finish is a bit clipped by the tannin. Very tight right now and not all pulled together, but I like the structure (good acidity up front and crisp tannin on the back) and think there could be some real potential here.

Menthol is the wrong descriptor for the nose, but is as close as I could get. I can't tell whether this just needs time to open (most likely) or if there is some TCA or if it's just wierd. We'll check tomorrow! On the second night, opened up to a more traditional Amarone nose and palette with raisins, cherries, etc. Although "big" it's not weighty, with enough acidity to brighten up the very ripe fruit. Perhaps more delicate in structure and profile than some other Amarones. I like it and might buy more at this price.
