  • There's a guy in my office playing romantic jazz music, probably one song on repeat the whole day. While listening to it, I can't help but think how romantic the Portuguese approach to Alvarinho is. 'Primeiras Vinhas' indicates the first vines planted by Soalheiro (30 years old) off which every grape is picked by hand and carried quickly to the cellar where fine lees aging starts after fermentation (not that romantic when talking about humans, but you get the point).

Don’t call my name, don’t call my name, Alvarinho. If you know your Alvs, you’re familiar with the fact that this grape has delicate aromatics and is destined to express itself without any new oak whatsoever. That’s why this was a winner. Straightforward, juicy acidity, light body. No complications. I like my lees a bit stronger, so I was expecting loads of creaminess, but I wouldn't argue that this was done just right.
