Community Tasting Notes (2) Avg Score: 85 points

  • Ruby-black colour; opaque at its core. Aromas of alcohol, black cherries, peaches, dark chocolate, violets, mint, blood orange. Medium bodied, with dark chocolate, black cherries, blood oranges, alcohol, and a bit of stemminess. Tannins are definitely present and a little green, clipping the the ~20-25s finish.

Considering the 2002 vintage was pretty weak in the Langhe, I'm impressed with this wine. Sottimano was one of the few producers to bottle all their single vineyard Barbaresco. If the tannins integrate over the next few years, this could be really delicious! While an obvious step below its usual level, this is a good example of selecting producer over vintage. 86-87 points for now.

With a few hours air and some medium-rare meat, the wine becomes even more pleasant. Drink now and over the next 3-5 years. 87-88 points.

  • Not a disaster, which was a real possibility in view of the vintage. However, it was not nearly what this wine would be in a ggood vintage. Less of everything one would expect.
