  • Big beautiful beast. Huge tannic backbone of iron filings and graphite holds this together and provides lots of potential for further aging. Front end is led by hints of toasted oak vanilla with red fruit that gives way to darker fruits in the mid palette before the graphite arrives to hold the long mouth coating finish that is a trademark of the Abreu wines. Excellent wine but it’s an Abreu so it should and always seems to be. This is not quite as good as the 2015 vintage of this bottling that is elite but this is great.

  • Brought to KM’s dinner. No notes. Just impressions.

Double decanted three hours before serving. This is a gorgeous BMF. It provides deep utter complexity balanced by incredible structure with broad shoulders. This is absolutely gorgeous… I am ripping through these too fast. Hold 3-5 years before popping the next one. 96+

  • Kind of disappointed and given the price point, we are rethinking our “investment” in Abreu.

  • Arizona Dreaming! (Guiseppe's in Scottsdale): No formal notes, but similar to my last note! This is an awesome wine and 2014 is drinking quite well right now. Abreu is made for the long haul, even though this wine is totally accessible now! Still leaning quite heavily on the hedonistic side of the scale, but some tertiary goodness makes itself known in the background. This will be a killer wine with more time in the bottle (ideally, I would drink this at 20 y.o., but I doubt I have the patience for that!) 96 today, maybe close to perfect in a few more years! Drink or hold, depending how you like your wines! Easy 96.

Note, my highest score for a red wine is 98.

  • No notes and only fleeting impressions as it was an epic night with both old friends and new before the Chateau Angelus dinner at Anhelo in downtown Phoenix tonight (8/31). All wines were split between 6.25 of us and unless noted, minimal decant (max 30 minutes).

I will say it again, Abreu is fabulous and Thorevilos is a favorite vineyard. The wine has everything you would want from a Napa Bordeaux wine- hold for a few more years and enjoy over the next 10 after that. Excellent
