  • Tasted in a tasting of Cazes Rivesaltes 1931-1939. Fortified on August 24th 1939, moved to age in a foudre on March 26th 1940, bottled on January 6th, 2012. 597 bottles produced. 15,5% alcohol.

Deep and still somewhat reddish and quite concentrated coppery color. Powerful and very sweet nose with intense aromas of Sun-Maid sultana raisins, chopped nuts, some cooked rose hips, a little bit of apple sauce, light chocolatey tones, a hint of prunes and a pungent whiff of rancio. The wine is full-bodied, lively and sweet on the palate with bold flavors of sweet golden apples, overripe blackcurrants, some cooked rose hips, a little bit of dark raisin,s light pruney tones, a hint of exotic spice and a touch of jammy dark berries. The wine feels rich on the palate, but surprisingly fresh - not thick or oily - thanks to the high acidity. The finish is sweet, slightly warm and rather long with developed flavors of raisins, sticky syrupy molasses, some spicy bitterness, a little bit of of bittersweet baked apple, light caramel tones, tertiary hints of fruit cake and dried fruits and a touch of smoke.

A beautiful, complex and still remarkably youthful Rivesaltes that came across as noticeably fresher and younger than the other Cazes Rivesaltes wines from the 1930's. The other wines felt more tertiary in style with noticeably more oxidative, nutty rancio character, whereas this vintage retained noticeably more fruit character in comparison. Tons of layers here, but nothing in excess. Remarkable freshness for such a sweet fortified wine. Absolutely beautiful.

  • Dark amber in colour, mix of fig, dried apricots, cardamom and Seville oranges on the nose. The palate is still fresh.
