  • Tasted in a tasting of Cazes Rivesaltes 1931-1939. Fortified on August 27th 1934, moved to age in a foudre on March 23rd 1935, bottled on January 6th, 2012. 592 bottles produced. 17,5% alcohol.

Translucent, medium-deep golden yellow color. Somewhat restrained and shy nose with sweet-ish aromas of golden raisin,s some alcohol, a little bit of bitter orange zest, light ethery VA notes and a nutty hint of rancio. The nose slowly opens up in the glass, gaining subtle dried-fruit aromas, but never becoming really open. The wine is full-bodied, sweet and moderately warm on the palate with somewhat restrained flavors of apple jam, fruit salad syrup, some burnt sugar bitterness, a little bit of nutty rancio, light notes of golden raisins, a hint of prunes and a touch of cardamom. The wine is moderately high in acidity, which offsets nicely some of the sweetness. The finish is lively, sweet and somewhat sticky with a little bit of alcohol warmth and lengthy flavors of dried pineapple, exotic spices, some burnt sugar bitterness, a little bit of baked apple, light nutty notes of rancio, a hint of caramel and a touch of golden raisin.s

A delightfully nuanced, harmonious and balanced Rivesaltes with lots of age. However, compared to the other vintages tasted in the tasting, this was definitely from the least impressive end, lacking the intensity and immense complexity the best vintages showed. A lovely effort by all accounts, but still didn't manage to shine in such tough competition.
