Shana Tovah, brought to a Rosh Hashanah dinner. Didn't know what would be on offer, which turned out to be chicken and salmon cooked on the grill, brussels sprouts, etc. Upon opening, this was a bit muted, even flat, but it opened up very well. Westphall has always been a bit more understated than the old Cemetery bottles (no longer planted to Zin, alas), and this has a dash more elegance, but it's no lightweight, carrying the fruit, tannin (sweet kiss of oak), leafy and briary notes. Even better with food.

Decanted for an hour. Wow, a very pleasant surprise. The previous bottle was fine, but this tasted like an entirely different zinfandel. Amazing depth with lingering fruit and briary notes on the long finish. I don't remember getting this level of complexity from any previous Westphail Ridge bottle. I now see a previous tasting comment that also noted a huge difference (and improvement) between bottles.

Vibrant fruit, very ripe. Supple tannins. Well balanced throughout.

Rich dark fruit, very ripe. Lovely well balanced wine, drinking delightfully now. This is a beautiful expression of Zin.

Wow. Interesting to compare this to our last note on this bottle. This was rich, tasty and nicely balanced. A bit of oak, with deep, dark fruit.
What is crazy is that we bought these 2 bottles from the winery and stores them side by side. Yet it's hard to imagine two more different notes.
